Temporary Bridge

Installation, 1998

Musrara, Jerusalem

Technique: rubber pipes & steel cables

Dimensions: 15 meters by 3 meters

A bridge is an architectural element. As such it is constructed in order to connect two distant points which could not be connected otherwise.

In Musrara, a neighborhood on the borderline between east and west Jerusalem, the conventional function of the bridge is undermined.

This bridge is constructed in an interior, closed space and is made from flexible rubber pipes. It hangs from the ceiling by thin steel cables, and is not located outdoors, where bridges are usually expected to be. Here it connects two extremes: the western and eastern walls of the house, while drawing a visual imaginary line which actually divides the space into two parts. This division brings about a new and different human function in the space and evokes a new vision of it. The bridge emphasis the distance and creates new relationships in the divided space, relationships of separation and of strange reciprocation at the same time. Behavior which results from formal division is transformed into human gestural communication - a metaphor of certain social situation with political affinity.
